I really like the 999, but w/e
Needless to say, I don't think that's a factory fairing. Looks like some half-assed aftermarket bit.

Kind of makes Chris Bangle a pleb in design...

I think it is a bit of a stock fairing... WHY?

I will take a million Bangle-butts over this monstrosity.

The thankfully short-lived R1200CL. BMW trying to chase H-D with a cruiser (R1200C) an then bagging it along with a huge fairing with far too many lights.
If H-D road kings and such have 3 front lights... then four must be even better, right?
At least it was a stupid premise that got killed by bad looks.
I lament the R1200ST more... a far better idea, but also tragically killed by unacceptable looks. BMW needed, and still does, a boxer engined sport touring bike.
It could have been the new R1200RS, and every bit as popular as the original oil-head R1100RS was, if it had been good looking, more like K1200R-Sport's half fairing.

Still, I can't imagine WHAT compels people to buy the bike.

Considering I've never seen one before, I'm guessing nothing does.

BMW only makes ugly bikes.
Ducati has never made an ugly bike.
In my personal opinion of course, which contrary to my own belief is not indeed fact.

I know you said your own belief is not indeed fact and I agree with you:

I was waiting for one of these to come along. I can dig it. But I figured a broad sweeping generalization was easier than actually looking up ever bmw bike ever made. Did it come murdered out stock?

Honestly, no idea. I just GIS'ed BMW motorcycle and this 1963 R60 came up and looked damn nice. I'm not a motorcycle guy in the least.
Here's a stock one, still pretty awesome, less matte paint:

Just wish I had gotten a good shot if it.
